Hairware – a curl for controlling electronic devices

Hair Extensions can Save Lives

Copper news by materials Phys.Org : Hair today, communication trigger tomorrow

Katia Vega and her colleagues from Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro have created a technology disguised as hair extensions. Together with the curl, a miniature Hairware device is attached to the head, conducting a signal of metallized hair. It reacts to touches and, depending on their number and the embedded program, sends various signals. As the researchers say, it can be used to turn on the TV and other household appliances. In addition, you can control applications in smartphones: send messages, record a conversation, transmit location coordinates and even take selfies.

Five women participated in the testing of the device. After the experiment, another application of Hairware was proposed: as an emergency aid. For example, a simple gesture of correcting the hairstyle will not arouse suspicion from the attacker, and the victim will be able to call the police in this way.

Researchers believe that, in general, the next logical step in the development of portable computers may be the use of two square meters of skin on the body as a "canvas" for sensors and electronic devices.

Other sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, can be placed in the hair bundles to combine movements and touches to the hair. In the future, the developers plan to make a similar device for beards.
