In China, the infection reminded citizens of SARS, a coronavirus infection that spread in the country from November to July 2002-2003. You can try to compare the two epidemics. In terms of the rate of spread, 2019-nCoV wins: in less than two months, the number of people infected with it amounted to 75% of the total number of people who had SARS in 9 months of that epidemic. But this may not be due to the properties of the virus, but due to the fact that now, in comparison with the 2000s, the mobility of the population has significantly increased. If we talk about the mortality rate, then for SARS it was significantly higher than for 2019-nCoV, and was 9.6%. For the current virus, the mortality rate is still about 2.1%. What is similar in these two outbreaks is their impact on the economy. As in the 2000s, after the outbreak of the epidemic, the shares of Chinese companies on the stock exchange began to fall.
There is a growing panic in the world, but because of illiteracy, people are taking rather ridiculous steps. For example, a significant number of corona beer virus queries appeared in the Google search engine – "Corona beer virus". Most of these requests are from North America. In the USA, according to The New York Times, people are massively buying medical masks, to the point that they can no longer be found in many pharmacies, and even in warehouses.
Australia is considering a proposal to evacuate 600 of its citizens from the epicenter of the spread of the virus, the city of Wuhan, but not directly home. A special quarantine island will be created for them – the island of Christmas. Other countries are also planning to evacuate their citizens from Hubei Province.
Some airlines from the United States, Great Britain, Malaysia and other countries canceled flights to China, and Georgia and Kazakhstan decided to stop flights with China.
Out of curiosity, Professor Zhang Wenhong, head of the department of infectious Diseases at the Huashan Hospital at Fudan University in Shanghai and head of the Shanghai Group of Experts on combating coronavirus, said in an interview that he sends mainly members of the Communist Party to fight the virus. "Didn't the Communists, when they took the oath, say that they put the interests of the people above everything?" – he said. This has become a popular topic of discussion on the Chinese Internet.
Meanwhile, no cases of 2019-nCoV have been reported in Russia. The Russian Far Eastern border posts, initially closed for the Chinese New Year, will remain closed – this decision was made by the Russian authorities. The Federal Passenger company has decided to refund money for unused tickets to China. For students of Russian universities from China, the holidays will be extended until March 1.
