Truth and fiction about gray hair

Gray hair: 7 popular myths and facts

New York dermatologist Howard Sobel is in a hurry to unravel it and explain where scientific facts end and unfounded fiction begins.

1. If you have a pair of gray hairs, a shock of gray hair is on the way.Myth.

This statement does not apply to everyone, says Dr. Sobel. By the age of 30, many have gray hairs. And although some have more and more gray hair every year, others may remain at this "initial stage" for years, or even decades.

2. If you pull out one gray hair, two gray hairs will grow in its place.Myth. "Plucking gray hair does not lead to an increase in their number.

But in place of the removed gray hair, the same gray hair will grow," says Dr. Sobel. And yet, do not rush to do this: you should not pull out gray hair, because this way you can damage the hair follicle, and then nothing will grow out of it — neither gray nor normal hair.

3. The age at which your mother turned gray is the approximate age of the beginning of your graying.Fact.

"Heredity largely determines when we get gray hair," says Sobel. But even genetics does not work "like clockwork" — the environment also plays a significant role in how soon (or not soon) you will encounter gray hair.

4. Smoking and the sun bring gray hair closer.Fact.

"Ultraviolet light and chemicals from smoking can harm your hair and cause depletion of melanocytes — pigment cells that determine hair color," explains Dr. Sobel. This is another reason to give up smoking and do not forget about protection from harmful sunlight.

5. From severe stress, you can turn gray.Partly a fact.

"The number of melanocytes that color the hair in our natural color is depleted with age, and stress accelerates graying in those who are predisposed to it," says Dr. Sobel. When you feel an overabundance of emotions, switch to slow abdominal breathing, which will help lower the level of stress hormones.

6. Permanent hair coloring accelerates graying.Myth.

This is completely untrue, since hair coloring has nothing to do with the appearance of gray hair. However, hair health can be significantly shaken by excessive experiments with paint, so do not forget about weekly nourishing hair masks and other useful habits of careful care of your curls.

7. If you have gray hair in your youth, it means that you will age faster than your peers.Myth. If you are one of the many who notice the first gray hairs before the age of 30, do not worry, Dr. Sobel reassures, it has nothing to do with premature aging — rather with your heredity.

Therefore, you should not worry (do not forget about the harmfulness of stress for hair).

Bottom line: If genetics and external factors still play a role in the speed and timing of graying, then the rest of the folk signs in this regard are practically groundless.
