Two news about cancer: the bad one first…

Report: one in two Britons will get cancer

BBCThe number of UK residents who will get cancer during their lifetime will make up almost half of the country's population by 2020, predicts a report prepared by the charity Macmillan Cancer Support (By 2020 almost half of Britons will get cancer in their lifetime – but 38% will not die from the disease – VM).

According to the organization, the estimated figure of 47% will be a serious burden for the public health service (NHS).

However, the probability of death in cancer patients will decrease, the report says.

The Department of Health has instructed the NHS to take the necessary measures by 2014-2015 to save 5,000 cancer patients in excess of existing standards.

Macmillan believes that the main reason for the increase in the rate of cancer cases will be an increase in life expectancy.

The growth of the survival rateTo compile the report, the organization used data on the incidence of cancer, the mortality rate among patients and the mortality rate for other causes in the UK.

It was also found that the number of people cured of cancer has increased compared to data from 20 years ago.

Macmillan explains the increase in the survival rate of cancer patients by paying closer attention to early diagnosis, improving methods of treating the disease and caring for patients.

An employee of the organization , Jane Maher , said: "After the end of treatment, many patients still have health and emotional problems long after the end of treatment. The consequences include rapid fatigue, pain, limited mobility and other side effects."

"We need to be able to cope with these consequences for the sake of patients, as well as for the sake of taxpayers. We need to make a plan to create conditions in which people will feel good at home, and not wait for them to need hospitalization."
