"I would like more and more people to remember that November 10 is Science Day, not Police Day," TV presenter Svetlana Sorokina summed up the awarding ceremony of 10 scientists–winners of the national scholarship competition "For Women in Science" L'Oreal–Unesco.

The chairman of the competition jury, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-Rector of Moscow State University Alexey Khokhlov announced that the winners of the 2010 competition were:

  • Anastasia Bochenkova (Moscow), Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Moscow State University,
  • Natalia Kryzhanovskaya (Saint Petersburg), PhD, Nanophotonics Laboratory, Saint Petersburg Academic University;
  • Natalia Lebedeva (Novosibirsk), PhD, Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry of Enzymes, Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine SB RAS;
  • Ekaterina Lyukmanova (Moscow), Senior Researcher at the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Oksana Maksimenko (Moscow), Senior Researcher at the Institute of Gene Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Ekaterina Obraztsova (Moscow), PhD, Laboratory of Electron Microscopy, Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Evgenia Peresypkina (Novosibirsk), Senior Researcher at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry SB RAS;

  • Svetlana Tamkovich (Novosibirsk), PhD in Cell Biology at the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine SB RAS;
  • Elena Khlestkina (Novosibirsk), Senior Researcher at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS.

After a short presentation by A.R. Khokhlov, during which he talked about the scientific contribution of each winner, the high citation of their articles, active pedagogical activity, it seemed that now exhausted respectable ladies in lab coats would come on stage, but to the delight and amazement of the audience, young and energetic beauties in luxurious outfits came out.

In addition to words of gratitude to their colleagues, relatives and teachers, almost everyone said that the competition "For Women in Science" has an important social orientation. After all, he supports young scientists who are not enough in Russian science, and besides those who need a lot of support in science – women. It was noted that the fairer sex work in science on an equal footing with men, but they also bear most of the family worries, parenting, etc. "Winning this competition is a good incentive to pursue a scientific career," Anastasia Bochenkova from the Faculty of Chemistry of Moscow State University noted, in particular.

"We all feel like real princesses on this day," said Evgenia Peresypkina from the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Novosibirsk). She said that November 10 is the next anniversary of her wedding and that only recently she and her husband found out that this day is also celebrating Science Day.

A permanent member of the jury of the competition, the winner of the L'Oreal-Unesco international competition in 2007, Professor of the St. Petersburg Institute of High Molecular Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IVS), lecturer of the Chemical Faculty of St. Petersburg State University Tatiana Birshtein noted that every year it is more and more difficult to select winners. This year's competition received more than 400 applications. She remembered that on the eve of the ceremony she had been at an exhibition of paintings by Z. Serebryakova, where the female heroines of the paintings were presented as a fire burning in a vessel. According to T.M. Birstein, "the winners of the competition are also a fire burning in a vessel."

The current ceremony is the fourth in a row. The competition has been held in Russia since 2007 with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In four years, 35 women scientists (5 in 2007 and 10 in 2008, 2009 and 2010) have already received scholarships from the organizers. The amount of the scholarship is comparable to the awards for young scientists from the President of the Russian Federation and amounts to 350 thousand rubles. In order to be nominated for the award, it is enough to fill out a small questionnaire on the contest website. The winners said that this contest is good primarily for its accessibility: you do not need to fill out a mountain of papers. At the same time, only those who have the highest citation of articles in scientific journals can become the best, the jury evaluates it according to the Web of Science database. Women, candidates of sciences under the age of 35, working in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine or biology in Russian scientific institutes and universities can apply for the award.
