Better forty times at a time…

A little daily activity can replace going to the gym

ABC MagazineA new study by scientists from the University of Oregon (Oregon State University) proves that small two- to three-minute physical activity sessions, totaling 30 minutes a day, can be as good for health as a long trip to the gym.

Such "microactivity" will help prevent metabolic syndrome, hypertension and high cholesterol. To do this, you don't even need to do sports – it's enough to walk up the stairs, clean the apartment or sweep fallen leaves from the lawn.

The study was conducted with the participation of more than 6 thousand American adults. His results are published in the American Journal of Health Promotion (Association Between Biological Outcomes and Objectively Measured Physical Activity Accumulated in ≥10-Minute Bouts and <10-Minute Bouts). As it turned out, among those who do not find time to go to the gym, 43 percent still "gain" the required 30 minutes of physical activity a day due to housework or gardening. At the same time, among those who periodically go to the gym, only 10 percent of participants have 30 minutes a day, because on those days when they do not have a gym, people tend to be lazy at home watching TV.

"We contrasted the so–called organized physical activity, i.e. going to the gym or fitness, with a variety of daily activities that fill the day of a person leading an active lifestyle," writes Paul Loprinzi, lead author of the study. – The results proved that both variants of activity are quite comparable in terms of benefits brought to human health. Therefore, we encourage people who do not have time for frequent visits to the gym to look for options for physical activity in everyday life. For example, sit down while your favorite movie is interrupted by an advertisement, or go to the store on foot, not by car."

The study participants engaged in physical "microactivity" had a decrease in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, as well as a decrease in waist size and an improvement in metabolic syndrome comparable to regular gymgoers. The authors emphasize that movement and activity in everyday life are much more natural for our body than hard training in the gym. Therefore, you should not allow yourself to be lazy for at least 30 minutes a day. Take a look around — surely there are cases in your apartment or on your site that will help you take this time.
