Comrade, hold your nerves in check!

Anti-smoking programs proved ineffective

V. Vorotnikov, Medlinks.ru , according to BBC Health:
Extra smoking counselling 'doesn't help quitters'

As a result of a new statistical study organized by a group of scientists from the UK, it was found that such popular and widespread programs and courses offering people to get rid of nicotine addiction are in fact completely useless. 2,500 smokers participated in the study.

All of them were divided into four groups, in each of which the participants were tasked with quitting a bad habit. However, the first group received minimal support in their endeavor in the form of telephone consultations on the hotline and the provision of a number of simple tips from specialists. The second, third and fourth groups at the same time underwent intensive courses to combat nicotine addiction, using nicotine patches, special substitutes, chewing gum, and even some medications.

Six months after the initiation of the study, the scientists managed to contact only 59% of the subjects. It turned out that out of this number, only 18.9% of the test participants were able to actually not smoke during this entire time, and no difference in this indicator was detected among the control groups. Interestingly, in the first group, the success rate of quitting smoking is 20.1%, while the average for the other three groups is 17.1%.

Thus, it turns out that when a person quits smoking without any active outside help, he has much more chances to achieve success. Almost 80% of the subjects who quit smoking agreed to take a carbon monoxide test to prove that they really got rid of addiction. The rest refused to take this test, in almost every case referring to the lack of free time.

According to the researchers, the results obtained probably prove that various courses and anti-smoking programs are mostly ineffective. The most important thing in terms of quitting smoking is the psychological attitude of a person, that is, his own determination to quit this bad habit. All other factors will have only auxiliary significance – scientists are convinced.
