Dangerous Testosterone
High testosterone levels increase the risk of diabetes and cancer

British scientists have presented the results of the largest study to date on the genetic regulation of the level of sex hormones for certain diseases. Their observations showed that an increased level of the hormone testosterone, which is caused by genetic factors, can increase and reduce the risks of certain diseases depending on gender.
The article by Ruth et al. Using human genetics to understand the disease impacts of testosterone in men and women is published in the journal Nature Medicine, the press release of Testosterone levels affect risk of metabolic disease and cancers is on the website of the University of Exeter.
Excess testosterone increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, breast cancer and endometrial cancer in women.
In men, higher levels of the hormone reduce the risk of diabetes, but increase the likelihood of prostate tumors, observations have shown.
To prove this causal relationship, scientists studied the genomes of more than 425 thousand people and identified 2571 genetic variants associated with differences in the level of testosterone and another binding sex hormone globulin.
The results of observations showed that associations with diseases are causal, not correlative. Thus, high testosterone levels in women increased the risk of type 2 diabetes by 37%, and polycystic ovary syndrome by 51%. In men, on the contrary, the risk of diabetes decreased by 14%.
Cancer risks increased to an average of 23% depending on testosterone levels.
"The results obtained provide previously unknown information about the effect of testosterone on diseases. Gender differences emphasize that further studies should separately consider the effect of testosterone on diseases in men and women," the authors concluded.
Scientists emphasize that until new studies are conducted on the effect of testosterone levels on other diseases, in particular cardiovascular diseases, it is necessary to use supplements to increase testosterone with great caution.
