Get vaccinated against cancer

An educational project "Vaccination against cancer" has been launched in Russia

Ekaterina Yankevich, Mednovosti

The project was created by the ANO "Collective Immunity" and AIDS.The center is supported by a grant named after Andrei Pavlenko – it tells in an accessible and understandable language about cancer, infections that cause it and ways to protect it with vaccination. Scientific data are presented, tests and algorithms are developed. The format of the presentation of the material is extremely clear and understandable to a wide range of readers.

The creators of the "Cancer Vaccine" emphasize that two vaccines can protect us from viruses that can cause cancer in humans: hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus.

In 2018, about 13% of all new cancer cases were associated with infections. In absolute terms, this is more than two million new cases. A similar trend has been observed before. Every year, 25 people out of 100,000 people get cancer associated with infections, according to the project's website.

Antonina Oblasova, a popular science blogger, biologist, co-founder of ANO Collective Immunity, tells the Medical Portal about why it is important to convey truthful information about these vaccines:

"Readers always have a lot of questions about these vaccinations: why vaccinate a child against hepatitis B in a maternity hospital, whether adults need to do them, whether a teenager needs to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, whether this vaccination will cause infertility, whether an adult woman or an adult man needs it...  People don't know if they need to be vaccinated and why. Realizing the lack of this information, we decided to cover this topic in great detail through the project: to create a website where answers to these questions would be posted.

We have previously explained the basic terms for the untrained reader, such as "pathogen", "antigen", "wild virus". Then they told how the infection is related to cancer. Not only human papillomavirus and hepatitis B cause cancer. There are many other infections, even parasitic ones, capable of this. Unfortunately, there are no vaccinations against them, but we can prevent them either by curing them in time or by observing hygiene rules.

On the human papillomavirus and hepatitis B, we have made articles with answers to all questions about the infections themselves, their features and dangers, possible ways of their transmission, risk groups, methods of protection and features of vaccination. If a person does not want to read the article, but he needs to quickly understand whether he needs a vaccination, he can take the test. All this is available on the project's website at the AIDS site. The center".

She also said that scientific editors worked on the project, so that it can be considered as objective, understandable and correct as possible, and expressed the hope that medical workers will also be able to use the project for educational purposes.
