It is not necessary to lose weight

Is it possible to be fat but healthy?

Can you be athletic and healthy, even overweight? Scientists from the Faculty of Health of York University (York University's Faculty of Health) decided to answer this question. The results of the study showed that physical activity may be more important for obese people than weight.

The study showed that overweight people who exercise have a similar health profile to those who had a normal weight. The aim of the study was to study the effect of cardio-respiratory exercises on cardiovascular diseases among patients with moderate and severe obesity. The results of the study showed that even people with severe obesity – with a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 40 – can be athletic and healthy enough.

"Obesity was associated with poor health only in those overweight people who were not athletic and active. When obesity goes beyond the BMI of 40, the risk of cardiovascular diseases increases exponentially, but our study shows that a high level of physical activity is very beneficial for the health of overweight people, and this once again underlines the extreme importance of fitness," said Jennifer Kuk, an employee of the Faculty of Health.

The researchers examined data from 853 patients attending weight management clinics in Southern Ontario. It turned out that the amount of fitness needed to improve health was much less than previously thought. Moreover, these exercises may not even be enough for a person to start losing weight.

It turned out that 150 minutes of exercise a week, as a rule, lead to a slight weight loss – only about 200 grams. Nevertheless, even this amount of exercise significantly improves the health of people with severe obesity. So even those exercises that do not lead to weight loss are incredibly important for health, especially for people with obesity.

"In my practice, I often see patients who want to achieve different results. Some patients want to achieve an exclusively aesthetic result – that is, to lose weight. Others only need to improve their health. Our study has reliably shown that people do not necessarily need to lose weight in the first place to be healthy. To begin with, it's enough just to keep yourself in good physical shape, regularly performing a minimal set of exercises, and lead an active lifestyle," concluded study co–author Sean Wharton.
