Predisposition to hypertension: simple (and pleasant :) test

Scientists: red face when taking alcohol indicates the risk of hypertension

RIA NewsPeople who blush after a glass or two of alcohol are more likely to suffer from hypertension, although excessive alcohol consumption increases any person's chances of chronically high blood pressure, Korean scientists have found.

The work of the researchers is scheduled for publication in April next year in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

"Redness of the face after drinking alcohol, despite the use of special drugs, has always been considered as a symptom of high sensitivity or even intolerance to alcohol," says Jong Sung Kim, head of the Department of Family Medicine at the Chungnam National University School of Medicine.

According to him, red spots on the face are usually found in those people who are genetically unable to process acetaldehyde, the first metabolite of alcohol. As the president of the Korean Association of Family Medicine Kyung Hwan Cho (Kyung Hwan Cho) notes, women, elderly people, as well as East Asians are more likely to blush from alcohol compared to Europeans.

Scientists collected medical data on more than 1.7 thousand men, among whom 288 did not drink alcohol, 527 people blushed from alcohol, and the remaining 948 did not.

"Our results showed that the risk of hypertension increased significantly if people blushing from alcohol consumed more than four doses of alcohol per week. Among those who are not covered with spots, the risk increased when taking more than eight doses per week," the scientists say.

They believe that doctors who are aware of the patient's special reaction to alcohol should warn him about possible risks and urge him not to drink on an equal basis with others so as not to earn hypertension.
