Problems with an erection? Treat your gums!

The occurrence of erectile dysfunction was associated with gum inflammation

Copper newsTurkish scientists have found that men suffering from inflammation of the parotid tissue develop erectile dysfunction three times more often than their healthy peers, EurekAlert reports!

(Men with erection problems are 3 times more likely to have inflamed gums). The results of the work of researchers led by Faith Oguz from Inonu University were published in the December issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Ogus and his colleagues conducted a comparative study involving two groups of volunteers. The first group included 80 men aged 30 to 40 years suffering from erectile dysfunction. In the second, control group, 82 study participants were selected who did not have problems with erection. The average age of men in each of the groups was about 36 years.

At one stage of the selection, scientists excluded volunteers suffering from various systemic diseases, as well as smokers, since smoking is one of the factors contributing to the appearance of erection problems.

During the study, 53 percent of men suffering from erectile dysfunction were found to have inflammation of the parotid tissue (chronic periodontitis). In the control group, this figure reached 23 percent. After taking into account a number of factors, such as body mass index, level of education and income, scientists have calculated that men suffering from chronic periodontitis are 3.29 times more likely to have problems with erection than men with healthy gums.

"Erectile dysfunction affects the quality of life of approximately 150 million men worldwide, as well as their partners. The results of many studies suggest that chronic periodontitis can cause systemic vascular diseases, such as coronary insufficiency, which, in turn, may be associated with erectile problems," Ogus stressed. According to the authors of the work, the results confirmed the hypothesis that patients with erectile dysfunction are more likely to suffer from chronic periodontitis than other men. The authors of the study proposed to consider the improvement of the parotid tissue as one of the stages of treatment of such patients.
