$25,000,000 for stem cells

Billionaire philanthropists from the Eli and Edith Broad Foundation have donated $25 million to the University of California, San Francisco. These funds will be used to create a new stem cell research center. As a token of appreciation, the Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research will be renamed the Eli and Edith Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research.

25 laboratories specializing in research of embryonic and adult stem cells of humans and animals will gather under one roof in the building of the center. Scientists will be able to work on the creation of new drugs for such serious ailments as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, HIV/AIDS, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, cancer.

The construction and equipping of the center will cost 123 million dollars. The main investment contribution was made by the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which issued a grant of 34.9 million; earlier, philanthropists Ray and Dagmar Dolby donated 16 million to the center's fund. Construction work began at the end of the summer of this year, and the commissioning of the center is scheduled for mid-2010.
