A new hope for balding

Scientists have found a substance that helps against baldness

RIA News

A substance used in perfumery to imitate the smell of sandalwood stimulates human hair growth, scientists from the University of Manchester in the UK have found. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Communications (Chéret et al., Olfactory receptor OR2AT4 regulates human hair growth).

The researchers used a substance known as sandalwood to target the OR2AT4 receptor in the hair follicles. When applied to scalp tissue samples, sandalwood simultaneously increased hair growth and reduced the number of dead cells.

"The results of a small pilot study conducted by a contract research organization on 20 female volunteers suggest that the external use of sandalwood reduces hair loss," one of the authors of the work, Professor Ralph Paus, told The Independent.

The next stage should be a full-fledged testing on volunteers, but scientists believe that they are on the verge of solving the problem of baldness.
