Achievement – the first cloned camel

A camel clone has been bred in Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for the first time in the world. This was reported on Tuesday by the Gulf News newspaper.

A female camel, named Injez ("Achievement"), was born at the Camel Reproduction Centre (CRC) last Wednesday. She was cloned from cells implanted in the body of an adult female and was born after a normal pregnancy that lasted 378 days (the normal duration of pregnancy in camels is from 360 to 440 days).

Currently, Injez weighs 30 kilograms. DNA studies have shown that she is indeed a clone of the original camel.

According to Dr. Lulu Skidmo, scientific director of CRC, the birth of Injez is "a significant breakthrough that makes it possible to preserve the best running and dairy qualities of elite Emirati breeds."

Earlier, in February 2008, two twin camels, Zahi and Bahi, were born in CRC. They were created by embryological micromanipulation: a six-day-old camel embryo was removed from the donor's uterus, divided into two halves, which were transferred to the camel's body.
