Another effect of metformin

Metformin may protect against cancer – but only against liver cancer

Anna Kerman, XX2 century

The drug, widely used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, can prevent the development of liver cancer. The corresponding study was published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control (Metformin use and incident cancer risk: evidence for a selective protective effect against liver cancer).

Dr. Harvey Murff and his colleagues found that patients taking metformin are less likely to suffer from liver cancer than patients receiving other antidiabetic drugs.

Previous studies have repeatedly established a link between taking metformin and reducing the risk of developing certain types of cancer. However, the results of these studies could be significantly affected by differences in the duration of treatment, as well as other factors, such as body mass index and the quality of blood glucose monitoring.

The authors of the new work carefully monitored such factors in patients, information about which was stored in the databases of the American Veterans Health Administration. The study failed to find a link between metformin use and the risk of developing 10 different forms of cancer, with the exception of liver cancer.

The new work suggests that the use of methomine as a drug for the prevention of liver cancer requires further study.
