Antibiotics with a new mechanism of action

Swiss scientists have developed a new class of antibiotics

IA REGNUM

A new antibiotic with a unique mechanism and a wide spectrum of action against gram-negative bacteria has been developed by Swiss scientists. This is reported in a press release University of Zurich Antibiotics with Novel Mechanism of Action Discovered.

Gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Helicobacter pylori, Salmonella, Shigella and other Enterobacteriaceae, cause both chronic and acute life-threatening diseases. At the same time, even to relatively recently developed types of antibiotics, bacteria develop resistance. For example, to the drug Colistin, which is included in the so-called last reserve and has been used in the treatment quite recently.

Scientists at the University of Zurich have developed a fundamentally new type of antibacterial drugs. These molecules bind on the surface of bacteria with complex fat-like substances lipopolysaccharides and BamA protein, which is necessary for the synthesis of the outer membrane of bacteria. As a result, the bacterial cell wall that protects them from environmental toxins is destroyed, and the bacteria die. Until now, there have been no antibiotics that would affect this vital protein for gram-negative bacteria.
