Argus-2: the third operation is next in line

Surgeons from Russia performed the second operation to transplant a cyberset

Surgeons from the Scientific and Clinical Center of Otolaryngology of the FMBA of Russia successfully conducted the second Russia underwent an operation to implant an Argus II cyberset in the eye of a patient from Chelyabinsk, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports from the site of the operation.

"We are glad to have the second operation, it brings us closer to the moment when people doomed to blindness will have the opportunity to see the world again thanks to such technologies. We hope that they will be available to all those in need within the framework of the high–tech medical care program," said Ekaterina Ermolenko, Head of Public Relations at the Alisher Usmanov Charitable Foundation "Art, Science and Sport".

The operation began at 11 a.m. Moscow time and lasted about three hours, during which an international team of surgeons and specialists from Second Sight installed an Argus II cyberset in the eye of Antonina, a 57-year-old resident of Chelyabinsk who lost her eyesight more than 10 years ago due to a congenital genetic disease, retinitis pigmentosa.

At the end of June, a unique operation took place at the NCC of the FMBA of Russia to install one of the most advanced bionic vision systems, the Argus II complex from the American company Second Sight, in the eye of Grigory Ulyanov, a 59-year-old deafblind volunteer from Chelyabinsk who agreed to such an experiment.

The operation was completed successfully, and now Grigory can already see the contours and large symbols using the "second sight" system.  The most complicated operation, which lasted about six hours, was first performed in Russia thanks to the joint efforts of private philanthropists and Russian doctors and scientists.

After the successful completion of the first operation, its sponsors and participants, the Foundation for the Support of the deafblind "So-unity", the Alisher Usmanov Charitable Foundation "Art, Science and Sport", ANO "Sensor-Tech Laboratory" and the FSBI "Scientific and Clinical Center of Otolaryngology" of the FMBA of Russia announced that Russian doctors will conduct another an operation before the end of the year with the participation of another volunteer.

As doctors expect, the patient will begin to undergo rehabilitation and adaptation to the new vision system in a few weeks, when her eye is restored. As and Grigory, she will be able to see the contours of objects, silhouettes of people and symbols.
