Biohackers were recognized as dangerous to society
The ability to conduct experiments with the genetic code at home creates a risk of the appearance of organisms with undesirable properties. This is stated in the report of the Bioethics Council of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (Genome editing: an ethical review – VM), reports The Guardian (Experts warn home gene editing kits pose risk to society).
Experts are concerned that tools for genetic engineering have become widely available, which has led to the emergence of biohackers – "garage" biotechnologists-amateurs. For example, one of the companies began to sell a cheap kit (worth 100 euros) to create Escherichia coli, resistant to the antibiotic streptomycin.
The council's report also says that DNA modification technologies have become so powerful that governments must decide in advance whether to allow researchers to modify humans as a species.
Experts believe that although the creation of GM humans will be possible only in the future, the benefits and risks of modifying the human genome require urgent assessment. It is noted that genetic engineering will allow blocking hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis, as well as creating disease-resistant farm animals and plants. The Commission expressed fears that such procedures could "open the door to liberal eugenics" when children are modified according to the preferences of parents.
