Biological nanosatellite

A prototype of a biomodule for space research is being tested in Samara

A team of researchers from Samara University is testing the capabilities of a prototype of an automatic module for conducting biological experiments in near-Earth orbit in laboratory conditions. The biomodule is created in accordance with CubeSat standards and is designed to be placed on board a nanosatellite or a small spacecraft.

Standards for small CubeSat-type satellites have appeared relatively recently. This became possible thanks to the development of microminiaturization and nanotechnology. And now even the most ordinary schoolboy can assemble his nanosatellite having a volume of 1 liter and a mass of no more than 1.33 kg.

Nanosatellites were previously used mainly to study the Earth's surface and the Earth's atmosphere, but the specialists of Samara University decided to adapt them for biological experiments. It will be both cheaper and more interesting, since nanosatellites allow conducting experiments in outer space.

According to the project manager, head of the Department of Laser and Biotechnical Systems of Samara University Valery Zakharov, the prototype of the biomodule is now being tested in laboratory conditions. The selection of test organisms was carried out, among which there are plants, insects, and bacteria. A system for monitoring the state of biological objects and ensuring their vital activity has been created. After a full test cycle, a demonstration experiment in orbit is planned. The successful implementation of the experiment will allow Samara University to offer interested parties, both in Russia and abroad, a universal platform with a wide functionality for conducting various biomedical research in space.
