Biotechnology – medicine of the future

A biomedical forum has started in Novosibirsk

"Science in Siberia"

Scientific events of the All–Russian conference with international participation "Biotechnology - medicine of the future" are held on the sites of the Academic Park and NSU for three days.

It brought together about 230 specialists – from academics to postgraduates – from 14 cities of Russia, as well as from Australia, Belarus, Germany, the USA and Japan. As the chairman of the organizing committee of the conference, the scientific director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Fundamental Medicine of the SB RAS, Academician Valentin Viktorovich Vlasov, noted in his welcoming speech, "... the event has changed its format and expanded its scope."

"The first such conference was held 17 years ago,– said V. Vlasov, – and for a long time it was purely Siberian. There was a general academic program "Fundamental Sciences in Medicine", institutes and groups received grants on it, and at the conference participants from Siberia reported on the results: Moscow held its own, for the central part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Now we have made the conference all-Russian in scale and more predictive in subject matter."

The plenary part of the conference was opened by the speeches of two invited experts – academicians Alexander Gabibovich Gabibov and Vadim Markovich Govorun. Both reports are based on the work of large scientific teams: Alexander Gabibov heads the Moscow Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry named after M.M. Shemyakin and Yu.A. Ovchinnikov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vadim Govorun heads the Federal Scientific and Clinical Center of Physico-Chemical Medicine of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency. These organizations actively cooperate with academic institutions of Siberia – in particular, with the FIT Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS and with the IHBFM SB RAS.

Academician A. Gabibov outlined a broad direction of research aimed at obtaining super-specific molecules. Specific applications were shown: for example, the destruction of certain types of cells – both cancerous (lymphoma) and those that deactivate neural connections when using nerve gases based on phosphorus-organic substances (sarin, soman, V-gases). "It is fundamentally important that Alexander Gabibov and his colleagues develop programs and devices for high–performance search for molecules and microorganisms with certain properties, this is a fundamentally new approach to finding the next generations of antibiotics," Academician V. Vlasov commented. Academician V. Govorun devoted his speech to an equally wide range of issues related to the human microbiome – the whole set of microorganisms inhabiting us, pathogenic and beneficial, some of which are not even known yet. The scientist paid special attention to the microflora of the gastrointestinal tract, where the unexplored part, in his opinion, is about 40%, and the effects on the body of this "immunity factory" are in the widest range - from diabetes to premature birth and so on.

"Other remarkable scientists also make presentations," said Academician V. Vlasov. – In particular, these are corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences Maria Andreevna Lagarkova, Sergey Mikhailovich Deev and many others. In general, the conference now aims, first of all, to set promising tasks and establish new contacts." After three days of plenary, sectional and poster presentations, a specialized part dedicated to startups in biomedical technologies and a business game "Startup-Biotech" will be held at NSU.
