Centenarians in the database

About 500 people in our country have become participants in the research of the phenomenon of longevity

About this sb.by was told by Elena Mikhalenko, a leading researcher at the Laboratory of Environmental Genetics and Biotechnology of the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS.

The project "Genetic features of long-livers of Belarus" is implemented by the Institute of Genetics and Cytology of the NAS and the Department of Gerontology of the BelMAPO under the leadership of the Chief Scientific Secretary of the NAS Academician Alexander Kilchevsky. During the year of the project, according to Elena Mikhalenko, a DNA database of almost 500 of our centenarians has been created:

– This number includes 170 people over 90 years old. We collected not only their genetic, but also biochemical data. The composition of the blood was examined – this is the level of glucose, cholesterol, etc., as well as the hormonal status of these people – the levels of estrogen, androgen, as well as adrenal hormones. More than 300 people were examined – this is a category from 75 to 90 years old.

For the current year, Elena Mikhalenko noted, in order to get a complete picture of the country's residents by age, material will be collected for a younger category of citizens – aged 20 and up to 50 years. It is planned that about 500 more samples will be added to the DNA database.
