Computer radiologist

Artificial intelligence will analyze X-ray images

Engineering

An Israeli company engaged in medical scanning has signed a contract with a medical company from Utah in order to develop a new way to diagnose some diseases. Zebra Medical Imaging from Israel is teaming up with Intermountain to work together on a neural network that will compare the X-rays of the body with millions of images stored in its database. The main goal of the project is to provide radiologists and other physicians with new technology and to reduce the number of misdiagnoses.

For example, a patient is admitted to the hospital with symptoms of an unknown illness, and X-rays are taken. After the procedure, the images are studied not by doctors, who may miss a small but significant detail, but by a computer. The machine uses deep learning in order to carefully scan the database of images of other patients (anonymous). The computer looks for any deviations in the patient's images, which can cause symptoms. At the moment, the system works with bone tissue, the cardiovascular system and the lungs, although the developers plan to teach their program more.

Deep learning technologies are becoming more powerful, cheaper, and artificial intelligence can now fit on a USB stick. It is likely that such programs will help doctors as well.
