Dad has a bad boss…

A bad boss can lead to a heart attack

To confirm this obvious truth, Swedish researchers from the Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University studied the health status of more than 3 thousand men. The results of their work are published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

All the study participants (men aged 19 to 70 years working in Stockholm) were asked to evaluate the leadership style of their bosses, for example, how clearly they set a task for their employees and how effectively they interact with the team. After that, doctors monitored the health status of the participants for almost ten years. During this period, they recorded 74 cases of heart attack, angina attacks or coronary heart disease with a fatal outcome.

Those who rated the competence of their superiors low had a 25% higher chance of heart disease. For those who worked with bad bosses for four years or more, this figure was 64%. These results were obtained when testing all men, regardless of their level of education, social group, income, workload at work and lifestyle.

The authors believe that if their findings are confirmed, heart disease specialists will have to pay serious attention to the behavior of their patients' managers.
