Decent aging: abroad will help you

Decent Aging project launches in Kyrgyzstan

Marina Miroshnik, "Evening Bishkek"

Tomorrow, July 23, the project "Decent Aging in Kyrgyzstan" will start, which is funded and implemented exclusively under the leadership of the Danish international organization DCA Central Asia in partnership with "ADRA Kyrgyzstan" – humanitarian Agency for Development and Assistance, NGO "Resource Center for the Elderly", NGO "SCS Jalal-Abad". The total budget of the project is more than one million euros, which were collected by ordinary citizens of Denmark to help elderly people in Kyrgyzstan. The project covers Bishkek, Chui, Issyk-Kul, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions.

The money is planned to be spent on helping elderly people who need medicines, clothes, food and other vital things. The work will be carried out through partner non-governmental organizations, such as ADRA Kyrgyzstan, a Resource Center for the Elderly and others. They will work with their target audiences – each organization has a database of those in need.

"The critical situation of the elderly in Kyrgyzstan is alarming. The standard of living, officially set at around 4,599 soms, does not really correspond to the vital needs of the elderly: pensions are not enough for medicines, utilities, and the most modest meals require financial costs many times more. Social dependence on relatives puts elderly people in a humiliating position and entails neglect and violence," the NGO notes.

Types of violence against the elderly in the Kyrgyz Republic (according to the responses of respondents to the Help Age International study and other partner organizations):
