Do you like eggs? Eat healthy and don't be afraid of cholesterol!

Scientists at the University of Surrey (UK), working under the guidance of Dr. Bruce Griffin, have demonstrated that eating chicken eggs contributes significantly less to the formation of high cholesterol levels in the blood than eating foods rich in saturated fats, such as pastries and meat products.

As part of the work, practically healthy overweight volunteers consumed 2 chicken eggs a day for 12 weeks, otherwise adhering to a low-calorie diet recommended by the British Heart Foundation, in which the number of eggs eaten is limited to 3-4 per week. The control group followed a similar diet, but completely abandoned eggs.

As a result, the volunteers of both groups experienced a weight reduction of 3-4 kg and a decrease in the average level of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol levels (especially low-density lipoproteins, or "bad" cholesterol) in the blood of volunteers of both groups at the 6th and 12th weeks of work either decreased or did not change, regardless of the fact that the amount of cholesterol consumed with food in the experimental group was about 4 times higher than the amount of cholesterol consumed by volunteers from the control group.

These results confirm the already formed scientific opinion, according to which saturated fats consumed with food have a much greater effect on cholesterol levels in the blood than cholesterol-rich foods, including eggs.

According to Griffin, there is no convincing evidence of the relationship between the consumption of large amounts of cholesterol with food and the risk of coronary heart disease due to high cholesterol levels in the blood. In fact, eggs are a valuable addition to a healthy low-calorie diet that promotes rapid weight loss and cholesterol levels.

To date, there are no official recommendations on the optimal amount of eggs consumed, and many doctors still recommend giving up eggs the old-fashioned way. Nutritionists urge them to revise outdated norms and change recommendations in accordance with the results of studies conducted in recent years with results similar to those described above.
