The State Duma has passed a law according to which up to 12 years in prison are threatened for the sale of counterfeit medicines. TASS writes about this.

Such a period is provided if two or more people died as a result of actions committed by a group of persons by prior agreement or an organized group. Criminal liability arises if the value of the batch exceeds 100 thousand rubles.

If the actions of the attackers caused the death of one person, the violators face up to eight years in prison. For the circulation of counterfeit medicines and biologically active additives, they will be punished with forced labor for a period of three to five years or imprisonment for three to five years and a fine of 0.5-2 million rubles.

The production of medicines without a special permit will be punished by imprisonment for three to five years with a fine of 0.5-2 million rubles. If the crime is committed by a group of persons or on a large scale (more than 100 thousand rubles), the term will increase to five to eight years, and the fine will amount to 1-3 million rubles.

According to Irina Yarovaya, chairman of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, the tightening of legislation was supported by pharmacy associations, public organizations and the pharmaceutical industry as a whole. If the bill is approved by the Federation Council and signed by the President, it will enter into force on January 23, 2015.
