For the first time in Russia

One liver of a posthumous donor saved the lives of two patients

"Doctor Jupiter"For the first time, Russian transplant surgeons managed to perform a split-transplantation of a cadaveric liver to two patients.

The right lobe of the liver was transplanted to a man, and the left lobe to a woman.

A unique operation was performed at the A. I. Burnazyan Federal Medical Biophysical Center of the FMBA of Russia. For the first time, doctors performed extracorporeal splitting of the liver – dividing it into two halves outside the body after its explantation (removal) and preservation. The operation was accompanied by a complete reconstruction of the vessels of two separated fragments of the cadaveric liver, which was also performed outside the body.

Both patients who received a donor organ suffered from an incurable disease – cirrhosis of the liver. Now they feel satisfactory and are preparing to be discharged from the clinic in a week. Doctors note that a complex operation has certain features of conducting the post-transplant period. "However, in conditions of a colossal shortage of donor organs, the technology of transplantation of a divided organ to several recipients is promising and justified," the center said.

According to the A. I. Burnazyan Federal Medical Biophysical Center, in general, a posthumous donor saved the lives of six incurable people at once, including one child: in addition to the liver, the heart and lungs were transplanted, as well as two kidneys of the deceased.
