Happy birthday, Grandma Misao!

Today, March 5, 2013, the oldest woman in the world celebrated her 115th birthday in a Japanese nursing home with her favorite mackerel sushi on a plate.

Misao Okawa (Okawa Misao) came from a family engaged in the kimono trade in Osaka, a city in western Japan. She told the journalist who interviewed her that she never imagined that she would live to such an advanced age, and that she succeeded thanks to all the people around her.

Mrs. Okawa was born on March 5, 1898 and married in 1919. She gave birth to three children, two of whom – a son and a daughter – are still alive and have already passed the 90-year mark. To date, she has four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Apart from a leg broken at the age of 102, Misao Okawa had no serious health problems throughout her life.

At the end of last month, the centenarian received a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records, which confirms her status as the oldest woman currently living on Earth. Today, Japan, known for the longevity of its citizens, is home to both the oldest woman and the oldest man on the planet.

The oldest person on Earth today is a 115-year-old Japanese man living in Kyoto, near Okawa. Next month he will celebrate his 116th birthday.
