I'm going to my homeland…

They returned for the Nobel Prize
Russian scientists from abroad will be engaged in biotechnology at the PolytechnicAnna Romanova, Rossiyskaya Gazeta

On the basis of the RASA Research Center at the Polytechnic University, six new laboratories will be opened by the end of this year to work in various fields of biotechnology. They will be headed by Russians who have long gone abroad, and now have decided to work at home.

So, the center will have a laboratory that will work on the problems of controlled drug delivery to living cells using special nano- and microcapsules.

According to Gleb Sukhorukov, professor of the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University in London, who will lead the work, chemically and biologically active substances will be packed into microscopic capsules ranging in size from several tens of nanometers to a micron and deliver the medicine exactly where it should act.

– The technology can be used, including with chemotherapy, so as not to poison the whole body at once, but to deliver the poison to cancer cells point-by-point, - said Sukhorukov.

According to the scientist, while working at the Polytechnic, he and his staff will face the task of learning how to control the delivery of chemically and biologically active compounds in capsules using laser, radio frequency, ultrasound or other physical effects.

The scientist was working on this problem in his London laboratory, but there the main attention was paid to the creation of polymer capsules. He noted that St. Petersburg Polytechnic University provided all the necessary equipment and created the necessary conditions so that it was possible to work directly on the process of delivering capsules to cells.

Also, according to Gleb Sukhorukov, some employees of his English laboratory do not exclude the possibility of moving to St. Petersburg for a permanent job.

Another laboratory, headed by Andrey Pichugin from Gustave Russie University of France, plans to create a device for error-free DNA construction.
