Expert: methods of medical genetics should enter the medical insurance system

Yesterday, a round table meeting "Insurance and medical genetics" was held in Moscow, during which experts tried to find points of contact between these two spheres.

As explained by Natalia Vetrova, head of the medical and genetic service of the Center for Genetics and Reproductive Medicine, genetic screening is not carried out everywhere in Russia at the moment, unlike in the USA, where it is included in the medical insurance system. However, such tests can significantly reduce the number of children born with pathologies. Dmitry Boguslavsky, General Director of the Center for Genetics and Reproductive Medicine "Genetico" LLC, said that the recently signed Federal Law "On Cellular Technologies" does not regulate medical genetics. "But we believe that what we are doing requires state support," he added.

Larisa Popovich, Director of the HSE Institute of Health Economics, suggested one of the options for a possible partnership with insurance companies. She recalled that at the moment pilots are preparing for medical insurance using the risk-sharing model. Pharmaceutical companies will be extremely interested in making their product work effectively. "There should be a queue for you," she explained, adding that medical genetics is able to determine the effect of drugs on the therapy of various groups of patients.
