Artificial intelligence and melanoma diagnosis

Artificial intelligence-based skin neoplasm detection software has been able to diagnose melanoma in 100% of cases.

Researchers at Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of diagnosing melanoma with high accuracy.

The study involved 22,356 patients with suspected malignant skin tumors. The follow-up period was 2.5 years. The AI-based software version was able to detect 100% (59 of 59) of melanoma cases, 99.5% of all skin tumors (189 of 190). In addition, the new model diagnosed 92.5% (541 of 585) of precancerous foci.

The only case of basal cell cancer missed by the program was later diagnosed by a dermatologist. According to the authors, this indicates the need for clinicians to monitor the results obtained by artificial intelligence.
