Japanese scientists have created a prosthetic tongue
Dr. PeterScientists from Okayama University are testing an artificial language on four volunteers – a unique prosthesis that will return the ability to speak to patients.
The head of the study, Shogo Minagi, said that he was asked to create an artificial language by a colleague, Kenichi Kozaki, a professor of dentistry at Okayama University, who was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2014.
Due to the disease, the tongue had to be surgically removed.
Other patients affected by cancer of the tongue and oral cavity also lose the ability to speak.
– The development of this prosthesis is a laborious process. But thanks to Kenichi Kozaki, we managed to create a really good product.
The professor tried many different versions of the prosthesis and gave us detailed information about their advantages and disadvantages. Now we are testing our invention on four different patients who have lost the ability to speak," Shogo Minagi (Japanese team invents movable tongue prosthesis to enable speech for cancer victims) told Japantimes.
The prosthesis, created by Japanese scientists, is able to move up and down the oral cavity.
And patients will be able to manage it with the help of the base of the tongue remaining after the operation. According to the researchers, learning how to operate a prosthesis can take several months.
