French pharmaceutical company found guilty of manslaughter

RIA News

More than ten years after the scandal with the Mediator drug for overweight diabetics, which is the cause of hundreds of deaths, a court in Paris has ruled on the Servier pharmaceutical company and the National Agency for Drug Safety (ANSM), Agence France-Presse reports.

The court found Servier pharmaceutical company guilty of "manslaughter and bodily injury" and sentenced it to a fine of 2.7 million euros.

The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines, which "failed its mission to protect health," was fined 303 thousand euros.

The trial of Servier began in 2019. According to the prosecution, the company did not warn patients about the side effects and possible death from taking the drug, which was originally intended for overweight diabetics. Later, it was prescribed to everyone who wanted to lose weight to suppress appetite.
