Laboratory in underpants

Diagnostic underpants will help to monitor the health of patientsCopper news
American scientists have created underwear that independently measures a number of important vital signs, reports The Daily Mail (Smartypants!

The intelligent underwear that could save lives). A report on the development of a team of specialists led by Joseph Wang from the University of California San Diego (University of California San Diego) is published in the journal Analyst of the Royal Society of Chemists (Yang-Li Yang et al., Thick-film textile-based amperometric sensors and biosensors).

Wang's group applied carbon sensors to the elastic band of men's underpants using screen printing. With their help, you can determine blood pressure and heart rate.

In addition, sensors allow measuring the level of hydrogen peroxide and NADH coenzyme on the skin (in the inset on the left). By assessing the intensity of oxidative reactions in the body in this way, it is possible to determine the level of physical activity of a person wearing underpants with sensors.

According to Wang, the new development will be used to monitor the health of patients outside medical institutions, military personnel during combat operations, as well as athletes at competitions.

Underwear has attracted the attention of researchers not for the first time. In particular, underpants equipped with a thermometer, a tonometer and even a device registering an electrocardiogram were previously developed.
