Jan Vijg, a leading scientist in the field of genetics, professor of the Faculty of Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (New York), joined the scientific team of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) as a visiting professor.

Together with his team, Jan Weig was the first to develop transgenic mouse models to study mutagenesis in vivo. Since then, these models have been used to study the possible dependence of aging processes on genome damage. Currently, he is developing methods for sequencing the genome of individual cells to study somatic mutations and epimutations in relation to oncology and aging of the body.

Jan Weig received his Ph.D. from the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. He has also been a visiting professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, a professor of physiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center (San Antonio, Texas), and a professor at the Institute for Aging Research (California). Jan Weig is the author and co-author of more than 250 scientific publications, 8 patents and one of the founders of two biotechnology companies.

"I am very proud of the opportunity given to me to cooperate with the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics (FBMF) of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, which has an impressive interdisciplinary base for studying aging processes and developing innovative approaches in the fight against age-related diseases, which in the future will lead to an increase in human life," said Professor Weig.

"We are very pleased that Professor Jan Weig has joined our faculty. His pioneering work on longevity genes not only expanded our understanding of the biological processes of aging, but also led to the emergence of new drugs and the possibility to increase life expectancy, improving our health," said Alexander Melerzanov, Dean of the Faculty of Biological and Medical Physics.

"Professor Jan Weig is one of the leading geneticists studying age–related changes in the genome. The study of aging processes, overcoming age–related diseases are the areas that we plan to develop in our research and educational programs. We have already launched several laboratories that are aimed at studying the problems of aging and related issues. And, of course, joint work with a leading scientist in this field will allow us to advance and achieve significant results in the study of this issue," Oleg Korzinov, Executive Director of BFC Severny, stressed.
