Nanomedicine of Freedom Island

Cuba has brought to the market a medicine made on the basis of nanotechnology

RIA Novosti, Alexander Solovsky.

Industrial production of one of the versions of cyclosporine, the first domestic pharmaceutical product made using nanotechnology, has begun in Cuba, Cuban state television reported on Monday evening.

This medicine was created by specialists of the National Center for Research and Development of New Medicines. It is used after an organ transplant operation to exclude their rejection. It is also prescribed to patients with severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis.

Cyclosporine is a powerful immunosuppressant that selectively affects T-lymphocytes. Its classic version consists of eleven amino acids produced by the soil fungi Beauveria nivea.

The new version of cyclosporine differs from the usual one in its increased effectiveness.

According to Orestes Dario Lopez, the head of the drug development team, their version allows you to achieve the desired result using a three times smaller dose, which reduces the likelihood of side effects.

In addition, this type of cyclosporine completely dissolves in water in the form of nanoparticles enclosed in microcapsules.

The production of medicines using nanotechnology is a novelty for Cuba.

Meanwhile, the development of vaccines alone brings about $400 million a year to the local pharmaceutical sector.

At the end of last week, the Fourth International seminar on the development of nanotechnology was held in Havana, which was attended by researchers from two dozen countries, including Great Britain, Germany, Canada, New Zealand, Russia, the USA, Ukraine, and Japan. The president of the organizing committee of the forum was the famous scientist Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart (Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart) – the son of the leader of the Cuban revolution Fidel Castro.

Cuban medicine is one of the most advanced in Latin America. Last academic year, more than 32,000 specialists graduated from medical schools in Cuba, including almost 5,700 doctors from 59 countries.
