The competence Center of the NTI "Artificial Intelligence", created at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), is preparing to start testing a robotic device for the rehabilitation of people who suffer from a decrease in working capacity or complete loss of upper limbs. The development will allow the artificial hand to be controlled by "the power of thought," Roman Gorbachev, executive director of the Center, told TASS on Wednesday.

"We plan to start testing a prototype robot manipulator with artificial intelligence, designed for the rehabilitation of people who have lost the functions of their hands or lost their upper limbs, in the first half of 2019. We plan to conduct them on the basis of Russian rehabilitation clinics," he said.

The invention of scientists is a robotic arm manipulator with the function of grabbing objects, which can be attached to both a wheelchair and a human body. The artificial limb is controlled using a neural headset, which is put on the patient's head. The headset is equipped with an eye tracker that reads the direction of gaze.

"This system works in a complex: the tracker monitors eye movements, and the headset reads the impulses of the human brain and converts these signals into a specific action of the manipulator. In other words, it will be possible to control an artificial hand with the power of thought," Gorbachev said.

It is expected that the owner of such an invention will be able to walk independently, for example, to the store – to get products from the shelves and put them in a bag. In the future, the authors of the project plan to supplement the device with an interface that will allow the owner to program the robot independently, creating planned scenarios. For example, to make coffee in the morning.

NTI competence centers are divisions that are created on the basis of educational or scientific organizations and are engaged in the development of so–called end-to-end technologies of NTI. These technologies include big data, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, new and portable energy sources, wireless communication technologies, virtual and augmented reality technologies, and others. The centers conduct research and educational activities in a consortium with leading technology companies. The operator of the NTI Competence Centers project is a Russian venture company.
