No vaccinations – no money

In Australia, they stopped paying benefits for unvaccinated children

Anna Stavina, XX2 century, according to 9news: More than 140,000 families cut off from childcare payments for not vaccinating their kids

Several tens of thousands of Australian families who neglected vaccinations stopped receiving child benefits.

The new document was called "No vaccinations – no money" ("No jab, no pay"). Residents of Adelaide and the Gold Coast were the first to fall under its action – in these areas, the practice of refusing vaccinations has become the most widespread. For unvaccinated children, the standard child care allowance is no longer allocated, the amount of which is about 15 thousand Australian dollars per year. At the current exchange rate, this amount is equivalent to 11.5 thousand US dollars or 665 thousand Russian rubles.

The adoption of new rules for the payment of benefits was accompanied by a number of disputes. However, according to the Minister of Health of Australia Greg Hunt ("Minister Greg"), the number of vaccinated children has recently increased by 200 thousand.

"This is good news,– Hunt said. – But there is still a lot to be done, so we will continue to take tough measures. [These rules] are harsh because they touch on such important issues as public health and the safety of our beautiful children."

The document states that "sincere disapproval" of vaccination, which has no medical grounds, is not a valid reason for refusing vaccinations. After the new rules came into force (and they have been in effect since January 2016), the government stopped paying benefits for 142,793 children under the age of 5.

The average vaccination prevalence in Australia is 92.2%. However, in Sydney and its suburbs, this figure is significantly lower: only 88.9% of five-year-olds have been vaccinated against diseases such as whooping cough, measles and hepatitis in these areas.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2014 86% of infants worldwide were vaccinated with the CDV vaccine (whooping cough-diphtheria-tetanus). 82% of children were vaccinated against hepatitis B, and 85% of children were vaccinated against measles.

In Russia, thanks to the spread of vaccination, it was possible to practically solve the problem of polio – in 2008 and in 2009, not a single case of the disease caused by a wild strain was registered in the country. The introduction of hepatitis B and rubella vaccinations into the calendar reduced the incidence of these diseases by 20 and 400 times, respectively.
