Nobel laureate from Germany became an honorary doctor of TSU


German oncologist Harald zur Hausen, who received the Nobel Prize for human papillomavirus research, became an honorary doctor of Tomsk State University (TSU) on Thursday, RIA Tomsk correspondent reports from the award ceremony.



On Thursday, the international congress "Cellular and Molecular mechanisms of tumor-microenvironment relationship" began its work at TSU. Its organizers are Tomsk Research Institute of Oncology, Heidelberg University, TSU and the technology platform "Medicine of the Future". Scientists from Russia, Europe and the USA will present advanced research and effective methods of diagnosis and therapy of oncological diseases. Professor Hausen opened the congress.

"By order of the Rector of TSU, by the decision of the Academic Council of TSU dated April 29, 2015, to confer the title of Honorary Doctor of TSU to the Nobel Prize laureate <...> Doctor of Medicine Professor Harald zur Hausen for his contribution to the development of scientific research at TSU in the field of cellular and molecular medicine, to award Harald zur Hausen a gold medal for his contribution to the development of TSU," – the host of the ceremony announced.

Zur Hausen stated that it was an honor for him to receive such an honorary title, and noted that he had never been a medic in the classical sense of the word. He "treated" everyone "at once" with his research.

According to the university, the title of Honorary Doctor of TSU is awarded to "great educators, scientists, cultural figures." The first among them in 1891 was Tsarevich Nicholas (later Emperor Nicholas II). Among the honorary doctors are also the outstanding Russian chemist Dmitry Mendeleev, physiologist and academician Ivan Pavlov, Nobel laureate Zhores Alferov, poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

Harald zur Hausen is a German physician and scientist. He is the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Robert Koch Medal, the Charles Mota Foundation Award. He was awarded seven honorary academic degrees, elected an honorary member of several academies, in particular, the European Academy and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.
