Nobel Prize Winners in Physiology and Medicine Announced

In 2011, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to immunologists Bruce Beutler, Ralph Steinman and Jules Hoffman for research on innate immunity, the Nobel Committee at the Karolinska Medical Institute in Stockholm announced today.

Bruce Boitler was born in Chicago (USA) in 1957. He has worked at various universities in the USA, since 2000 – Professor of Genetics and immunology at the Scripps Research Institute, USA.

Jules Hoffman was born in Echternach, Luxembourg, in 1957. Studied and worked in France and Germany, headed the Institute of Cellular Molecular Biology in Strasbourg, France, in 2007-2008, President of the French National Academy of Medical Sciences.

Ralph Steinman was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1941. Studied in Canada and the USA, since 1988 – Professor of immunology at Rockefeller University in New York, USA. There he heads the Center for Immunology and Immune Diseases.

"The 2011 Nobel Prize laureates radically changed our understanding of the immune system, as they were able to identify the key principles of its activation," the document says.

The sum of each of this year's Nobel Prizes, like all previous ones, is 10 million Swedish kronor (1.45 million euros).
