Scientists from the University of Rochester in New York and the University of Nijmegen (the Netherlands) have calculated how the trend of the spread of Parkinson's disease will develop in the next quarter of a century.

Today, neurological disorders are the world's leading cause of disability. And the number of people with Parkinson's disease is growing the fastest. Over the period from 1990 to 2015, the number of deaths and disabilities due to this reason has more than doubled.

According to scientists, in the next quarter of a century, the number of cases will approximately double and, according to the most conservative estimates, will amount to 12.9 million people against 6.9 million cases in 2015. The authors obtained the figures by analyzing current trends and using available data on population growth in the world, including an increase in the proportion of the elderly population.

The word "pandemic" is used in relation to infectious diseases, but if it could be attributed to Parkinson's disease, then such figures and development trends allow us to talk about the pandemic nature of the spread.

At the same time, according to the authors of the study, the situation with the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease leaves much to be desired even in developed countries. For example, in the United States, only $ 200 million was spent on research of the disease, while about three billion were spent on HIV research.

And in China, for example, for two million people with Parkinson's disease, there are only 100 specialists in the treatment of this disease. The researchers call for a serious approach to the problem and immediately begin to develop an action plan to solve it, as was done with HIV, tuberculosis and other diseases at the time.

Dorsey & Bloem's article The Parkinson Pandemic—A Call to Action is published in the journal JAMA Neurology.

Earlier, macaques managed to cure Parkinson's disease with the help of stem cells.
