St. Petersburg surgeons performed complex operations and saved two children in one day

Surgeons at St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University saved two children in one day. One of the surgeries was performed intrauterine - on a baby who had not yet been born. Another surgery was performed on the heart of an infant, who was not even a day old. This was reported to "RG" by the press service of the university.

Doctors diagnosed the unborn baby with chylothorax, a progressive accumulation of lymph in the pleural cavity. This condition occurs as a result of multiple lymph vessel abnormalities or defects in the fetal chest cavity, with a dramatically increased likelihood of death.
- At the council meeting, chaired by Rector Dmitry Ivanov, the decision was made to conduct an intrauterine operation, and to solve the problem the fetus was injected with its mother's blood, that is, the blood transfusion took place directly in the fetal bladder," explained the press service, adding that such manipulation was the result of the university's scientific and practical work and that such operations have not yet been performed in Russia.

As for the newborn, who was not even a day old, she was diagnosed with a heart tumor even before delivery. When the child came into the world, it became clear that they should not delay with the intervention, they had to operate urgently, since cardiac insufficiency was rapidly increasing. The tumor was removed during the operation and turned out to be bigger than the baby's heart.

By the way, the baby's mother was sent from Tver to give birth at the Pediatric University. The university doctors specialize in such surgeries and further rehabilitation of the rescued babies.
