Russia has begun testing a drug for the "nuclear" treatment of liver cancer

RIA News

Russian doctors, together with scientists of the Rosatom State Corporation, have begun preclinical trials of a drug based on the radioactive isotope yttrium-90 for the treatment of liver cancer, the director of the Leipunsky Institute of Physics and Energy (FEI, Obninsk, Kaluga Region, part of the scientific division of the Rosatom State Corporation, told RIA Novosti at the Atomexpo-2018 forum Andrey Goverdovsky.

"Preclinical trials have begun. They are on the basis of the Medical Radiological Scientific Center named after Tsyba. It is planned to start clinical trials in two years," Goverdovsky said.

In Russia, about 7 thousand cases of primary liver cancer and 130 thousand cases of metastatic liver cancer are diagnosed annually. At the same time, primary liver cancer does not respond well to chemotherapy, and metastatic liver cancer practically does not respond to it. Therefore, it is proposed to use microspheres with yttrium-90, which "get stuck" within the vascular network of tumors and therefore ensure the destruction of cancer cells by irradiation.

Earlier in an interview with RIA Novosti, Goverdovsky noted that the production of radiopharmaceuticals based on the radioactive isotope yttrium-90 for the treatment of liver cancer will be a priority nuclear medical project for the FEI in the coming years.

The organizer of Atomexpo-2018 is Rosatom State Corporation. The general information partner of the forum is RIA Novosti agency (the flagship resource of MIA "Russia Today").
