The Forum on the problems of the older generation opened in St. Petersburg
The number of elderly people aged 80 years and older has increased almost one and a half times in Russia in recent years, from 2.9 million people in 2005 to 4.3 million in 2012, the press service of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Russian Federation reported on the opening day of the forum "The Older Generation" in St. Petersburg.
"At the beginning of 2012, there were 4.346 million people aged 80 and older in the Russian Federation (at the beginning of 2005 – 2.911 million)," the ministry said in a statement.
The number of people aged 85 and over has also increased in recent years (1.036 million in 2005 compared to 1.517 million in 2012). Despite the fact that there is a positive statistic in the life expectancy of Russians, problems in the areas of healthcare and social protection of Russians remain.
"The issues of preserving the health and quality of life of the older generation of Russians, as well as the problems of social adaptation of the elderly have become key within the framework of the International Forum "The Older Generation", which opened on Wednesday in St. Petersburg," the Ministry of Labor said in a statement.
Managers and specialists in the field of health and social protection from all regions of the Russian Federation gathered to discuss the current problems of the elderly in Russia. The Forum is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. Within the framework of the event, seminars and round tables on topical issues of the life of the elderly and their role in modern society are planned.
The forum will host a specialized exhibition, as well as a cultural and entertainment program for the elderly. The forum will last until Saturday, March 30.
