Siberian non-narcotic analgesic

A cure for pain without side effects of narcotic drugs was invented by scientists from Tomsk and Novosibirsk

The innovative analgesic drug, which is being developed by Siberian scientists, is recognized as one of the 100 best inventions of Russia by the end of 2015.

Scientists of the Tomsk company "IFAR" and the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences are working on the creation of the drug. Unlike existing potent analgesic drugs, the drug does not have a narcotic effect on the body.

"Well-known analgesic drugs affect opioid receptors and are narcotic drugs. The molecule, which became the basis for the new drug, affects other cannabinoid receptors and, according to the data obtained, does not cause addiction characteristic of analgesics of central action," says Veniamin Khazanov, General Director of IFAR.

The molecule, which has analgesic properties, was obtained by scientists as a result of the synthesis of a new class of substances. According to its chemical structure, it is fundamentally different from the natural compounds on the basis of which modern narcotic pain medications are produced. The researchers discovered the analgesic activity of the molecule during a comprehensive assessment of the possible biological effects of the new compound.

"Pharmacologists pass each new molecule through a kind of "sieve" – standard models to test its properties," explains Veniamin Khazanov. – One "sieve" allows you to find out whether it affects bacteria, others test the effect on the main vital systems of the body in norm and pathology. Sometimes, "related" opportunities discovered in this way or in clinical trials become dominant for the development of a new drug. This was the case, for example, with sildenafil, which was tested in the clinic as a means to improve blood circulation of the heart. The identified side effects of the drug led to the appearance of Viagra - the third greatest accidental achievement in medicine, after X-rays and penicillin."

According to the CEO of IFAR, research of this level became available to Tomsk scientists due to the fact that the territorial innovation cluster "Pharmaceuticals, Medical Equipment and Information Technologies" acquired a chromato-mass spectrometer - an apparatus for studying the properties of medicinal molecules. Now a whole team of scientists – biologists, neuroscientists, chemists, pharmacologists, chemical analysts - continues to work on the development of a new analgesic. The invention is patented in Russia, the process of international patenting is underway. By the end of 2016, the developers plan to start testing the drug on animals.

"We are preparing a project to be put into operation, we are preparing documents with business partners, funds and we are preparing for the development of the investigated substance itself. In order to enter the international market, research abroad will be needed, for this we are negotiating with certified laboratories," said Veniamin Khazanov.

He also said that foreign companies are interested in the invention and negotiations are underway with them. If there are investments, you can get a medicine ready for registration in 7-8 years. As the developers say, it will be available to all segments of the population at a cost.
