Spray will save from hacking: robbers will be marked with DNA markers
A Spray of DNA to Keep the Robbers AwayJohn Tagliabue, The New York Times, October 18, 2010
Translation: InopressaA few years ago, after burglars got into McDonald's in Dutch Rotterdam, the administration decided to change the security system, The New York Times reports.
The local police have just proposed something unprecedented – a device that sprays with a spray of synthetic DNA molecules on everyone who is in range, and at the same time calls the police. The device is triggered when it is turned on by a cafe employee, explains journalist John Tagliabue.
The sprayed spray is visible only in ultraviolet rays. "DNA markers have been added to it, which are used only in this particular place. This allows the police to find out exactly where the thief got into," the publication explains. Now a warning is written on the door of McDonald's: "If you steal, we'll mark it."
The spray was invented in Britain by two brothers, one of whom is a policeman and the other a chemist. The police admit that no one has been detained yet thanks to the spray, but they believe that the crime rate has greatly decreased, since the mysterious spray scares away intruders.
At first, the spray at McDonald's was sprayed for no reason. It turned out that the employees forgot or did not know that the system works if you take out a 10 euro bill, which is in a money clip under the counter, the publication explains.
"The City Hall of Rotterdam promotes the use of spray and sometimes takes the costs on itself. She also advises using "markers with DNA" to mark valuables such as computers or cameras to facilitate their identification in case of theft," the article says.
