Stroke treatment: stem cells are at least safe

For the first time in the world: stem cells from strokeIsraelInfo
In early September, the first phase of the world's first clinical trial of a new method of treating the consequences of stroke using stem cells was successfully completed at the University of Glasgow.

The positive result paves the way for the expansion of clinical research in this area, BBCNews reports.

The first phase of trials proved the safety of therapeutic injection of stem cells into the brain of patients. At this stage, low dosages of the therapeutic drug were used, and only three patients participated in the study. After making sure that the procedure did not cause side effects in any of them, the researchers will expand the group to nine patients at the next stage and will gradually increase the dosages, while developing methods for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment.

If everything continues to go as well, then therapy of damaged brain tissues with stem cells can be introduced into clinical practice in five years, not earlier," explained the representative of the company producing stem cells.

Currently, there is no effective treatment for post-stroke brain damage. The degree of recovery of functions depends on the individual characteristics of each patient. Stem cells are the main hope of modern medicine – with their help, they hope in the future to learn how to treat many currently incurable diseases of the nervous system, including paralysis and post-stroke complications. However, so far all research in this area is still at the earliest stages.
