American scientists have concluded that strenuous work and study, contributing to stress, causes accelerated telomere length reduction and cellular aging. This is reported in the press release of New Doctors’ DNA Ages Six Times Faster Than Normal in the First Year

The Intern Health Study (Ridout et al., Physician Training Stress and Accelerated Cellular Aging), which was conducted at the University of Michigan, involved 250 students in an internship. Experts measured the length of telomeres that protect DNA from damage during cell division, before and after training. Telomeres are indicators of cellular aging, since cells approaching the end of their life cycle have shorter lengths.

It turned out that during intense study, DNA aging accelerates by about six times. At the same time, the negative effect depends on the duration of classes. According to scientists, a similar relationship can be observed in people of other professions, as well as in situations in which a person is subjected to prolonged stress for several weeks or months.
