Taking medications under control

Medications will independently control the regularity of intakeCopper news
American scientists have created a capsule that informs the doctor that the patient has taken the medicine, reports Physorg (Rx for health: Engineers design pill that signals it has been swallowed).

The device was developed by a team of specialists from the University of Florida (University of Florida) under the leadership of Rizwan Bashirullah (Rizwan Bashirullah).

The device is an ordinary capsule for medicines, on which thin strips of silver are glued. These strips are an antenna and are applied to the surface of the capsule in the form of paint made of metal nanoparticles. The antenna is connected to a microchip located inside the device.

When the patient swallows the capsule, the device generates very low voltage electrical impulses. The microchip converts them into a signal and transmits them via an antenna to an external receiver, which communicates with the doctor's mobile phone or laptop, informing that the patient has taken medicine. Then the capsule dissolves, and the microchip passes into the intestine, after which it is freely excreted from the body.

The scientists tested the operability of the new device using various models and bodies of the deceased. According to Bashirulla, less silver enters the body with a capsule than when drinking tap water. He noted that this development will help to avoid many situations when patients forget or intentionally refuse to take medications.

According to the American Heart Association, patients suffering from chronic diseases usually take only half of the medications prescribed by a doctor. About 10 percent of hospitalizations and 218 thousand deaths per year are associated with a violation of the schedule of taking medications.
